Samos is an island full of green that is located in the east part of the Aegean Sea. Its area is 478,2 square kilometers and it has about 35.000 residents. It consists of four municipalities and its capital is Vathi.

The tallest mountains of the Aegean are found on Samos. Mt. Kerkes is ideal for mountaineering and therefore only few have the opportunity to enjoy his wild beauty. On the other hand Mt. Ambelos (or Karvounis) can easier be reached and enjoyed by individuals of each age. Between the mountains one will find valleys and small plains, giving the visitor the impression of absolute harmony and infrequent beauty. This blessed and separate place achieves a unique combination of the colours of the earth and the sky. Due to the high mountains, there is a lot of rainfall in the winter and as a result there is rich vegetation and many rich springs. Although there were many fires in the last years, Samos still remains an island with many green areas.

Though the island is quite small, it is knownfor its wine. It is said that Dionysos, the god of wine and vineyards, wanted to thank the inhabitants of the island for helping him fight off the Amazones, who dared to condemn his adoration and taught them the art of winemaking.

Samos, especially in the Spring, is an ideal meeting place because it has frequent communication with Athens and Thessalonica, as well as connections with many European cities through charter flights.

Great culture was developed on this island and quite a few famous persons that dealt with art, literature, philosophy and the theories have lived here. The great mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras was born on Samos, whose theories influenced decisive the mathematic world. Another great personality, Aristarchos, was born and raised here. This great astronomer was Euklides student and the first one to declare that the earth is circling the sun whilst turning round its axis.

The climate of Samos is mild, cool in the summertime and cold in the winter. The sun shines almost 8 months and spreads its light over the beautiful beaches.

The island has regular coastal connection with Piraeus, but also with the Dodekanese, Chios, Mytilini, Ikaria, Fournoi and Efesos, which is located on the coast of Asia Minor. The airport has daily 4 internal national flights. During April and October over 50 charter planes reach each week the island. Flying dolphins connect daily Samos with the islands of Ikaria, Fournoi, Agathonisi, Leipsoi, Kos, Rhodes, Chios, Mytilini, Patmos, Leros and Kalymnos. There is also a flying dolphin that reaches Alexandroupoli and Kavala, while once week there is a big car-ferry boat that connects Samos with Thessalonica.

Samos produces many kinds of products, the major of which are the famous sweet wine and the olive oil. However, during the last years there is also a dynamic growth in tourism. In April the island starts to change face and especially in the summer months it is full of tourists.

Kokkari

Kokkari is 10 kilometers to the west of the city of Samos and because of its good landscape, attracts many tourists and windsurfers.

The narrow alleys of the settlement remind the ones in the Cycladic islands. The variety in colors and architectural styles and the blue sea and sky create a pleasant visual contrast in the village.

The people of Kokkari are known for their hospitality. You can often find them sitting in their yards telling old stories. Many of them would even invite total strangers to come in, have a coffee and try the traditional desserts they have made.

2 kilometers outside Kokkari, there is the exceptional location of "Mana"

Kokkari is the prettiest seaside village on Samos. With its three good beaches, long colourful waterfront and picturesque fishing harbour, all overlooked by the characterful old village above.

The perennial trees and the flowin water make the place look exotic. In "Mana", there are the relics of an ancient temple devoted to Asclepius. Many medical conventions take place in that area under the trees. In "Mana" there are also gardens cultivating orchids. Nowadays, the famous orchids of Kokkari are sold in Greece and abroad.

Kokkari and its paths is an ideal place for naturists. Some representative plantation samples are: moss, conifer, healing herbs, fragrant plants, orchids etc. A visit to the stream of 'Mana' with its perennial plane-trees is definitely worthwhile.

Although Kokkari has largely retained its ‘village’ character it also enjoys quite a cosmopolitan atmosphere – especially in the evenings when people come to stroll, sit at a waterside café, and later dine. There is a wealth of eating places to choose from, ranging from traditional taverna to upmarket bistro, and some nightlife.

The main pebble beach stretches for half a mile. Around the corner are two pretty shingle bays; the further sheltered from the frequent prevailing wind by an attractive rocky headland. A string of Samos’ most famous beaches begins only a 20 minute walk to the west with Lemonakia.A good bus service links Kokkari with Samos Town 10 kms away. All excursions pick-up from the village, mountain bikes can be rented, there is a windsurf school www.samoswindsurfing.gr and the mountains behind offer fine walking opportunities.
